A close source yesterday revealed that the 24-year-old speedy winger left the county on Saturday morning for a four day trial stint with Maritzburg United.

The source said Songani is expected to arrive back in the country this morning, in time to join the rest of the Warriors squad who are in camp ahead of their friendly match against Mozambique at Barbourfields on Sunday.

“He left on Saturday aboard a South African plane. He went to Maritzburg United for trials. He should be back in Harare tomorrow (today) morning, before proceeding to Bulawayo for the Warriors match,” said the source. “He communicated with Ian (Gorowa) [national team coach] and he knows the players’ whereabouts,” added the source.

Efforts to get a comment from Gorowa were fruitless as his number was unreachable but the player was not part of the Harare based Warriors players who left for Bulawayo yesterday morning.

Songani’s manager More Moyo and Harare City Football Club coach Bigboy Mawiwi could also not be reached for a comment. Mawiwi is said to be in Marange where he is attending a funeral for a church member.

Harare City Football Club secretary general Tarisai Kwenda confirmed their player is out of the country, but not in South Africa.

“I tried to get hold of Songani some days ago but his number was unreachable so I asked the kit manager Kuda Murambiwa who told me that he has gone to Malawi to solve some family issues. Silas lost his uncle during the season, who had become his guardian since his father is no more, and the family had wanted him as one of the senior members of the family to sort some issues but we could not release him at that time.

“I was told he left the country over the weekend to sort that issue so as far as I am concerned, he is in Malawi – unless those arrangements changed and I was not informed. That Maritzburg issue was just a rumour which we heard some weeks ago but no formal negotiations had taken place. But like I said maybe those arrangements could have changed and I was not updated since I was also busy with some other council issues in the last few days,” said Kwenda.

However, another source, a player at Harare City, corroborated that Songani is truly at Maritzburg.

“I don’t know the Malawi version, what I know is Silo is in South Africa and he will be back tomorrow morning (today),” said the player.

Information gathered yesterday also suggested that Ronald Chitiyo would also be leaving for trials at the club this weekend.

Interestingly, Harare City are eyeing Chitiyo to replace Songani in the event that their midfielder moves abroad as hugely expected.
