At least 16 teams are expected to take part in the event sponsored by the Warriors midfielder, who plays for South African Absa Premiership champions Kaizer Chiefs.

Organisers of the football tournament yesterday confirmed that former national team coach Norman Mapeza, Bidvest Wits defender Thomas Sweswe and former national team player Edzai Kasinauyo will grace the event.

Last year the inaugural trophy was won by the former Premiership side Buffaloes head coach Timothy “Sicho” Masachi’s side Deportivo La Sakubva after beating Barons 6-0 in the final.

The leading junior football club in the province was last year inspired by Zimbabwe national Under-20 team player Liberty Chakoroma, and current Buffaloes players Farai Banda and Phillip Thembani.

This year they will be ineligible to play in the tournament as they are now over the age limit.

Spokesperson for the organisers Panganai Mbaradza said they have polished up all the preparations, adding that the tournament was meant to tap talent in the Manicaland province.

“Just like last year we are expecting a tough tournament, We are expecting about 16 teams, so far 11 have confirmed and l think by the end of the tomorrow, (today) all the teams would have confirmed,” he said.

“Norman Mapeza confirmed this week that he is going to grace this year’s tournament. We had already Edzai Kasinauyo and Thomas Sweswe on the list. So far we are not yet in a position to confirm the total sponsorship package, but we have got a lot of surprises,” he added.
