HENRY Muringani, a public prosecutor based at the Chitungwiza Magistrates’ Court, yesterday appeared in the dock at the Harare Magistrates’ Court charged with attempted murder after he allegedly drove at high speed and almost ran over his former wife following a domestic dispute.

Muringani, who came to court on summons, was remanded out of custody to January 13 next year for trial when he appeared before Harare regional magistrate Fadzai Mtombeni.

Prosecutor Tungamirai Muganhiri told the court that on July 14 this year, Muringani — who is employed by the Ministry of Justice — visited his former wife Primrose Mbedzi at her house in Unit C, Seke, Chitungwiza, intending to see his child. Upon arrival, he parked his Toyota Raum vehicle outside the perimeter wall and entered the house.

The court heard that Muringani was not amused after his former wife, a student teacher at Seke Teachers’ College, told him that she had taken the child to her mother in Mutare without his knowledge.

An argument broke out and Muringani then allegedly grabbed his former wife and pushed her against the precast wall. In a bid to rescue herself, the complainant allegedly picked up some stones intending to pelt her ex-husband. Further allegations are that Muringani stormed out of the property and dashed into the vehicle with his ex-wife in hot pursuit. She allegedly threw a stone at him and smashed the car’s windscreen. It is alleged that Muringani then started the engine and drove at high speed towards the complainant who was now standing outside the gate. He allegedly hit the complainant and trapped her between the vehicle and the precast wall. The complainant sustained a fractured leg.

A report was made to the police, leading to Muringani’s arrest.
