THE Zimbabwe Baseball and Softball Association (ZBA) will host the Dream Cup Baseball tournament at Hamilton High School in Bulawayo on Friday with all baseball clubs around the country expected to battle it out for top honours.

BY RONALD MOYO

ZBA president Mandishona Mtasa yesterday confirmed the competition, which was supposed to get underway yesterday.

“Teams were supposed to start camping for the tournament today (yesterday), but due to certain circumstances, changes have been made. They will now group on Friday,” Mtasa said.

ZBA board member (administration) Thembani Moyo said Dream Cup is an open tournament which also targets Zimbabwean players pursuing their careers in South Africa. “In the past years, we have been restricting this tournament to provinces, but this time we are also inviting anyone interested. It is an open tournament and we are also expecting players from South Africa,” Moyo said.

Three Bulawayo teams have already confirmed taking part in the competition.

“So far, we have three teams that have confirmed participation and they are all based in Bulawayo, but we are expecting teams from all corners of the country.

“Monte Carlo, Royal Cap and Bull Dogs are the teams that have assured us of their participation, but I am sure Red Hawks from Harare are also interested in taking part. We also expect independent teams from places such as Masvingo and Mutare,” Wellington Nyika, ZBA development officer said.

Nyika also pointed out that the sport of baseball has struggled to raise its profile in the country because of lack of corporate support

“We used to have the tournament annually, but due to financial constraints, we stopped for a certain period. Even right now as we are preparing for this tournament, we are facing difficulties because we do not have any source of financial support,” he added.

All teams taking part are expected to group at Hamilton on Friday for a combined training session so that even the independent teams can have time to select players they want in their teams.

So far, a shield has been confirmed for the winning team. The tournament ends on Sunday.
