THE Zimbabwe Junior Golf Association (ZJGA) holiday tournament programme is expected to enter the home stretch next week with four competitions confirmed for what promises to be an exciting post-Christmas golfing period for the country’s junior golfers. SPORTS REPORTER

Four major golf tournaments have been lined up in Harare and Mutare in a space of a week.

Local junior golfers will be eager to get their New Year off to a bright start when they converge at Royal Harare Golf Club on January 5 for the Future Masters tournament.

After the Future Masters, the young golfers are then scheduled to move across town to Chapman Golf Club for the Ray Straker Junior Golf Championships set for January 6-7.

The annual tournament, which is held in the memory of golfer Ray Straker, will see several local junior golfers taking part in it, as they battle for the top honours.

A hectic golfing week will be completed with the staging of the Leopard Rock Junior Championship at the picturesque resort on January 9 before the programme ends with the last event, the Hillside Junior in Mutare.

Brian Maphosa, the ZJGA president said: “We expect some exciting golf from the juniors as they showcase their talent.”

Maphosa went on to say that he looks forward to an interesting 2014 as the country’s juniors continue to excel in their game.

The ZJGA holiday tournaments programme got underway with the successful hosting of the Nomads Under-23 tourney played at Country Club.

Promising junior golfer Stuart Krog won the event on a score of -1 ahead of Pride Sembo while Justin Kersten finished third.

Junior golfers then played at the Zimbabwe Junior Strokeplay Championship from December 9-10 at Borrowdale Brooke with Krog yet again emerging victorious while Kieran Vincent finished The programme then moved to Wingate Golf Club where Jack Allard won the Zimbabwe Junior Matchplay from December 12-13 before a six member junior golf team took part in a Tri-nation Junior Championship in Lusaka where they finished second behind hosts Zambia.

Meanwhile, the country’s top junior golfers Krog and Travis Smith were expected to start their campaign at the 50th edition of Junior Orange Bowl Championship late yesterday.

The tournament will be held at the Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables, Miami Florida and runs until Monday.
