DECEMBER 17 will see the launch of a local e-commerce website with an online music store called JukeAfrika.

The site is aimed at distributing music by artistes of an African origin regardless of the music genre that they sing and regardless of whether they are still based in Africa or are now out in the Diaspora.

“JukeAfrika’s business model is that it will enter into distribution agreements with the owners of the music rights to the content that will be uploaded onto the site.

“These could be music artistes in their individual capacities or representation through their record labels,” said the director and co-founder, Takudzwa Chaora.

He said JukeAfrika would then earn a commission off each download purchased from the site, while the owner of the music rights obtains the larger proportion of the proceeds from the downloads, as their mechanical royalties.

Chaora said upon launch, users of the site or customers would be able to purchase music downloads through two methods.

These methods are the purchase of a pre-paid cash voucher from a retailer’s POS and redeeming the voucher online through entering the pin code on the voucher (similar to topping-up mobile phone airtime) or through international card purchase.

“It would appear that the more convenient method of purchase for the local market would be the cash voucher one and JukeAfrika is in the process of widening its planned network of retailers who will sell the vouchers from their POS systems,” Chaora said.

Chaora said their aim was to have JukeAfrika become a hub that contains the musical content and biographies of numerous African artistes that will then present them with an opportunity to raise their profiles in the international arts fraternity.
