Mbada confirm Barbourfields

BARBOURFIELDS Stadium will be the venue of the historic 2013 edition of the Mbada Diamonds Cup final between Highlanders and How Mine to bring the season to a fitting finale on November 30.

Gate charges for the final will be maintained at $1 and the stadium, with an official capacity of 26 000, is expected to be a full house.

The organising chairperson of the Mbada Diamonds Cup Tafadzwa Chiremba confirmed the developments yesterday after a meeting with the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League leadership.

“The venue is Barbourfields Stadium on November 30. We are yet to confirm the broadcasting issue and the time.”

This will be the first time that the final will be held outside Harare in its three-year history after Rufaro Stadium was the venue last season with the National Sports Stadium having hosted the inaugural final in 2011.

In 2011, Dynamos beat Motor Action 1-0 and last season successfully defended the trophy after beating Monomotapa 2-0 at Rufaro.

But this year, a new venue will crown the newest champions with giant killers, How Mine, the conquerors of Dynamos and Caps United, going into the match as favourites against Highlanders, who are still chasing a league and cup double.

How Mine have already qualified for the Caf Confederation Cup, but await approval from their owners Metallon Gold Zimbabwe before they can register by the November 30 headline.

Highlanders, even if they win the cup, will not be able to take part as they are banned for three years after they withdrew from the competition in 2011 after the draw had been conducted.

They were also fined $1 500 after the appeal, driven by Zifa who had registered the Bulawayo giants against their will, was turned down by the continental body. The last year of suspension is next season.

Winners of this year’s competition will take home $130 000 and a $110 000 transport, kit and accommodation subsidy to take part in the Caf competition while the losers will get $90 000.
