The 89 workers, who were hired as contract workers by the previous MDC-T-dominated council between 2008-2013, claimed that they were being victimised for being MDC-T supporters.

Currently, Zanu PF boasts of nine councillors and the MDC-T has three.

Council chairman and Zanu PF Marondera Central Ward 11 councillor Kennedy Muraicho confirmed the termination of the contracts. He, however, dismissed claims that the move was targeting MDC-T members only.

“It is true that 89 contract workers had their contracts terminated. This came after a full council meeting that resolved there is need to trim the current number of workers.

“Their contracts expired on October 15 and we were left with no option, but to resolve that they should leave. I strongly disagree that the move is targeting workers belonging to the MDC party only, but even those from Zanu PF are being affected as well. We are going to renew the contracts of some of the workers who were working at critical areas, like ambulance drivers,” Muraicho said.

Muraicho said the council was currently mapping ways of paying the workers.

“The council owes the contract workers about $122 000. On the other hand, all council workers are being owed $1,5 million. There is currently 344 permanent workers and we need to deal with it to cut costs,” he said.
