LANDS and Agriculture deputy minister Tendai Savanhu has urged churches in Mbare to come up with projects, such as sinking boreholes, in order to address water shortages that have hit most parts of Harare.

Savanhu said this on Sunday while commissioning a borehole at the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) in Mbare.

Savanhu, who is also the MP for Mbare constituency, said he was pleased to note that as a church, CCAP had taken steps in addressing some of the problems affecting the community.

“I am pleased to note that this borehole will not only serve this church, but from what I have been told, it will serve the whole community surrounding this church,” Savanhu said.

“I would also want to urge all other churches in Mbare to emulate this project which does not only benefit the church, but even non-Christians. Water is life and without it we cannot survive.”

The legislator also challenged other church leaders in attendance, Rev Joseph Charles Juma, Rev Tasara Ndlovu and Salvation Army Captain Masimba Chidzomba, to assist him in fighting crime in one of Harare’s oldest suburbs.

“I am also calling to the church leaders here present to work together with me to find ways to minimise criminal activities in our community,” Savanhu said.

“The government is committed to work together with the church to fight crime and protect our properties such as this borehole from vandalism,” he added.

CCAP Harare Presbyterian Moderator Reverend Alexander Malemelo also called upon the Mbare community to protect the commissioned borehole against vandalism.

“I also urge the Mbare community to protect this borehole. Yes, it is in our premises but its purpose is to serve the whole community,” Rev Malemelo said.

The event was graced by one of the country’s gospel maestros, Mechanic Manyeruke, and Beta Balls director Maureen Nyemba.

Savanhu donated $1 000 for the borehole project which was spearheaded by CCAP Voice of Mbare gospel music group and completed at a cost of $4 500.
