Akim Masuku of Chezhou Village in Hwange was convicted on his own plea of guilty to contravening the Parks and Wildlife Act (illegal possession of ivory) by Hwange provincial magistrate Rose Dube. Six months from a suspended sentence on a previous conviction were also brought into effect.

His co-accused Normal Ncube from the same village pleaded not guilty and would be tried in due course.

He was remanded in custody to October 30.

Prosecutor Namatirai Ngwasha told the court that Parks rangers on patrol saw carcasses of 11 elephants about 38 kilometres from Hwange Main Camp while on a routine patrol.

She said they followed a spoor that led them to the homes of Masuku and Ncube and found them in possession of 200 granules of cyanide and 13 elephant tusks, leading to their arrest.
