VETERAN boxing promoter Stalin Mau Mau yesterday escaped imprisonment by a whisker after he was slapped with a wholly-suspended 15-month jail sentence for driving without a licence and negligent driving when he appeared before Harare magistrate Blessing Murwisi.

The sentence was commuted to community service. On the first count, Mau Mau was ordered to pay $300 by October 31, failure of which he would serve a three–month jail sentence.

A further six months were wholly suspended on condition that he would not commit an offence of a similar nature in the next five years.

On the second count, he was sentenced to six months in prison of which one month was wholly suspended for five years and the remaining five months were commuted to 175 hours of community service at Rhodesville Police Station, starting tomorrow. Mau Mau had pleaded guilty to both counts, saying he did not want to waste the court’s time.

Prosecutor Babra Ndoro alleged that on September 8, Mau Mau drove an Isuzu KB due north along Domboshava Road while the complainant, John Mawiro, was cycling southwards.

The car approached Windone shopping centre and Mau Mau then turned right at the shops.

Ndoro told the court that the accused suddenly turned right in front of the cyclist resulting in a collision.

Mawiro fell down, sustained minor injuries and lost two teeth. Mau Mau told the court he was in possession of a United Kingdom driver’s licence at the time of the accident, but failed to locate it and subsequently produce it within the stipulated time.

Ndoro, however, argued that Mau Mau could have regularised the foreign licence to get permission to drive in Zimbabwe.

In mitigation, Mau Mau said he took Mawiro to the police immediately after the accident and promised to cover all medical expenses.
