The musician was admitted at a private hospital in the capital, Harare on Thursday and discharged on Saturday morning.

In a statement on Saturday, her management noted: “On the 10th of October 2013, Prudence Katomeni-Mbofana was admitted into hospital with a severe mastitis that caused an infection throughout her body.

“Doctors managed to stabilise her and get rid of the infection. We are happy to announce that she has been discharged from hospital this morning, but she is still under strict bedrest (instruction).

“Due to this she will be unable to perform at The Sundowner this afternoon. But she hopes to see you at the next one (show). We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Mastitis is inflammation of breast tissue that typically develops when the milk is not properly removed from the breast. It leads to swelling of the breast, pain or a burning sensation, fever and fatigue, among other symptoms.

In an interview with NewsDay yesterday, Katomeni-Mbofana said she had recovered and was due for medical review on Thursday.

“I am now well,” she said. “I have managed to take my children to school this morning and I am now cleaning my house. The attack was severe, but I have recovered.

“I have always had a problem of excess milk accumulating in my breasts whenever I am breastfeeding and it seems to be getting worse with age. The recent attack was the most severe and I have been told to closely monitor and manage this accumulation. I am going for a review on Thursday.”

She hopes to resume shows soon and compensate her fans that expected to see her on stage on Saturday.

However, sources say Katomeni-Mbofana’s illness was only a last blow to a performance that was already in jeopardy.

The show is said to have been hanging in the balance since Wednesday last week when the musician and her team could not acquire a perfect sound public address system for the show on time. The system they used at a previous show is said to have caused problems because of its poor quality.

Katomeni-Mbofana confirmed they had not acquired a quality sound system for the show by Wednesday, adding her health problem had worsened the situation prompting the management to release a statement on Saturday.
