The party’s spokesperson Rugare Gumbo confirmed the development yesterday. It is understood that Samkange collapsed and died in the early hours of Monday.

“I heard so, but have not got confirmation from Mashonaland West province. He collapsed and died on his way to hospital,” Gumbo said.

Mashonaland West provincial chairman John Mafa said the province had recommended national hero status for Samkange.

“As a province, we hope he will be accorded national hero status,” he said.

An economist by profession, Samkange worked as a journalist before leaving the country to join the liberation struggle in 1964.

After independence, he served in various government positions before he became MP for Zvimba West constituency and eventually, provincial governor of President Robert Mugabe’s home province.
