ONE-HUNDRED and eighty-two students graduated at the Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) yesterday amid calls by the institution to be allocated more land for expansion.

Graduands were capped by President Robert Mugabe, who is chancellor for all State universities in Zimbabwe.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony, HIT acting vice-chancellor Quinton Kanhukamwe bemoaned lack of land for expansion of the institution.
“Your excellency and chancellor, land for the expansion of the university continues to be elusive as we have not been able to make any meaningful headway with Mashonaland Central Province’s promise and Harare City Council,” Kanhukamwe said.
He, however, said in spite of the setback, HIT had made phenomenal progress in coming up with new technologies that would benefit the nation in future.
“HIT is participating in the GEEP (Graduate Entrepreneurial Employment Promotion Programme) by designing and manufacturing solar vegetable dryers as well as combo incubators/hatcheries that are meant for distribution under GEEP. The solar vegetable dryers are meant to enhance post-harvest preservation of fruits and vegetable produce using solar technology,” Kanhukamwe said.
The students graduated in areas of Information Science and Technology, Business and Management Sciences, Engineering Technology and Industrial Sciences and Technology.

HIT was established in 1988 as a national vocational training centre.
Over time, it evolved into a technical college offering courses in automotive, electrical and mechanical engineering.
In 2005, the institution was granted degree-awarding status with the promulgation of the Harare Institute of Technology Act (Chapter 25:26).
