ZVA seeks funds

THE Zimbabwe Volleyball Association (ZVA) is seeking funds to send the men and women’s teams to represent the country in the Zonal World Volleyball Championships qualifiers set for Botswana and Zambia next month.

Both teams qualified after finishing second and first respectively at the Africa sub-zone Group K qualifiers held in Lilongwe, Malawi in July.

The women’s team, coached by Vulindlela Moyo, topped their group winning all their matches.

The women’s team emphatically beat hosts Malawi 3-0, got a narrow 3-2 win over second-placed Zambia and finally beat Namibia 3-1 while the men’s team, coached by Artwell Gororo, started with a 3-1 victory over the hosts before they lost 3-2 to eventual group winners Zambia before wrapping up with a 3–1 win over Namibia.

ZVA secretary-general Ringisai Mapondera yesterday told Southern Eye Sport that they needed $25 000 for the trip.

“We are appealing for funds to send the men’s team to Botswana on October 7-14 and the women’s team to Zambia from October 22-27.

“The two top teams will then go to the African qualifiers although we have not been informed on the venues yet. We need about $25 000 for both teams to cater for travelling, camp and accommodation. The figure may go down depending on the number of days the teams will go into camp,” he said.

Mapondera said they are confident that the teams can progress to the next stage.

“Both teams have a chance of qualifying to the next stage of the competition.

“The women’s team was undefeated in Malawi while the men’s team only lost to Zambia,” he said.
