In an interview yesterday, the newly-elected union president Norest Chademana said the union was facing a lot of challenges due to dishonesty by employers in the sector.

He accused employers of deducting subscriptions from workers’ wages without remitting the money to the union.

Chademana said companies in Harare topped the list of defaulters, followed by those in Bulawayo, Gweru, Masvingo and Mutare. He could, however, not be drawn to divulge figures.

“We are owed a lot of money, but we would have to do some calculations to give you the exact figures,” he said.

“For example, one bus company owes us more than $100 000 in unremitted dues, while other companies owe even more. Our unremitted subscriptions run into millions of dollars.”

Chademana said the union represented workers drawn from the road, air and the rail transport sectors.

He said parastatals such as Air Zimbabwe and the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) owed huge amounts of money.

“We are calling for the new government to put into place laws which will make it an offence for employers not to remit money that is deducted from workers’ wages to the rightful beneficiaries. That is a violation of workers’ rights,” Chademana said.

Chademana was last week elected president of the union at a congress held in Harare, while Zvarevashe Kuziva is his deputy.

Tafadzwa Matanhire was elected secretary-general, Wilson Dube his deputy and Clement Tshuma the treasurer.
