Taking us ‘forward’ to yesterday

ON Saturday, MDC organising secretary Nelson Chamisa, who turned 35 this year, will be the master of ceremony at Sakubva Stadium in Mutare where the people’s party will be holding its 14th anniversary celebrations.

Luke Tamborinyoka

This week, (Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs minister) Emmerson Mnangagwa and (Defence minister) Sydney Sekeramayi are part of the Cabinet team President Robert Mugabe reappointed for the umpteenth time and by the time their term ends in 2018, they would have served a total of 38 years each as members of Mugabe’s Cabinet.

Talk of career Cabinet ministers!

They have been in Cabinet for almost the same time young Chamisa has lived on this earth!

Mugabe’s latest Cabinet is just a big joke, to say the least.

If Zimbabweans and the world at large have been waiting for the new Cabinet to get the message of the policy direction Zanu PF wants to take this time around, everyone has been disappointed.

It’s more of the same!

Mugabe has simply taken the country forward to yesterday! With an average age of around 70 years, it would be unfair for the Facebook generation of this brave 21st century to expect salvation from this lot. The youth and the women largely remain bystanders, while Mugabe and his old guard take the mantle of both the party and the country.

It is a Cabinet which does not inspire any confidence at all.

It ranges in irony from a Minister of Media more known as a media hangman for his closure of independent newspapers to a Deputy Minister of Information who owns an “independent” and “privately-owned” radio station in the country.

We now have fully-fledged ministries to deal with “courier services”, “climate” and “psychomotor” activities when these could at best have been departments in other ministries.

How ridiculous can we get!

The prospects remain bleak for my beloved media fraternity.

Ten years ago, when I was the secretary-general of the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists, I was taking Professor Jonathan Moyo to court over the unConstitutional provisions of Aippa (Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act).

And he still disagrees with Sadc and the rest of us that this is an area where reform is necessary.

We are back to square one.

For our sins, we could see the return of PaxAfro by next week and 1 000% local content in all our media by tomorrow to mark the second coming of the good Professor!

The return of this doyen of hate speech is certainly no good news to an industry expecting media reform and the full implementation of the provisions of the new Constitution in relation to information access and the role of the State media.

And then, the new Minister of Energy Dzikamai Mavhaire is old, tired and weary to the extent that he needs the energy himself first before he gives it to the rest of the nation.

Josaya Hungwe (responsible for Psychomotor activities) is just another joke!

There is basically no new person among the Cabinet ministers, only a sprinkling of new faces among the deputies. More like rearranging the chairs of the Titanic in the hope of changing its fate!

Lazarus Dokora, Hungwe, Mavhaire and Paddy Zhanda etc, give one the impression that this is more about providing a lifeline to expired cadres than anything else.
If ever there was need for any evidence that this party, and the country is finished, this is it.

The old man simply wants to take his party, and unfortunately the country, to his grave.

Only two Ministers have apparently been demoted, Saviour Kasukuwere, now Minister of Climate Change and Obert Mpofu, the Minister of Transport.

If one looks at recycled material such as Joseph Made, Ignatius Chombo, Simbarashe Mumbengegwi, Kembo Mohadi and Mnangagwa, one gets the confirmation that the President is taking too far the gospel of the green revolution, of recycling as being good for the environment!

This is simply a party of yesterday people that wants to lead us today, tomorrow and the day after. As for Webster Shamu, the newly-appointed Minister of Information, Communications Technology, I am not even sure if he can use an iPad.

Then there is the apparently laughable plot to dilute the MDC’s influence in the two metropolitan provinces of Harare and Bulawayo by appointing Ministers of State for Provincial Affairs, whatever that is.

Zanu PF does not believe in the new Constitution, particularly the issue of devolving power to the provinces. That is why they have recentralised by appointing these Ministers of Provincial Affairs. This is a major statement against the Constitution and we all have to prepare for more attacks on the people’s charter that we regarded as a revolution.

In the battle of the factions, it appears the faction that was behind the theft and violence in 2008 and the grand theft in 2013 has benefited handsomely, if one looks at the figures who have landed a sizable handful of the influential posts.

From the Speaker of Parliament to the Finance minister and the Minister who will do the spin, the survivors of Dinyane appear to be very much still with us!

Indeed, they have survived to fight another day.

As for the influential Mines Ministry, we have chosen to take it to Zvimba. We cannot gamble with such a key ministry and so we have decided to take it to our village in Zvimba by giving the portfolio to our close relative, Walter Chidhakwa.

It remains a Cabinet of archaic minds that could still return to Chinhoyi in the belief that pure diesel can ooze out of a rock.

A quick glance at the picture combo of those who solicited help from the diesel n’anga will show that the characters who went to Chinhoyi remain in Cabinet.

In this brave 21st century, we have Cabinet ministers who go to a sangoma with the sanction of the full Cabinet in the belief that Zimbabweans can end up getting their fuel from a rock!

Well, this must have been the original meaning of the word Cabinet — something made of (dead?) wood!

  1. Shut up Luke Tamborinyoka – it was your boss, Tsvangirai, who threw a lifeline to ZanuPF in 2008 by going to bed with ZanuPF instead of driving home MDC’s advantage. The country is in this situation precisely because of MDCs’ stupidity. I cannot find any valid reasons why MDCs joined ZanuPF in a coalition – what was the point? Don’t give us the nonsense it was “to save the country from collapse” because it was ZanuPF’s Chinamasa who introduced multi-currecies just before the formation of the GNU in 2009. The economic revival was not up to MDC-T jus like “liberation” of the country was not up to Zanu or Zapu.

  2. Very poetic indeed.Part of the blame ndeyenyu imi maMDC.You helped Mugabe to retain his old guards through your partisan proportional whatever seats representation. If Bob decides to call it quits today we shall have a ZANU(PF) President until 2018 whereas in other countries its 90 days and elections are held. What the people rejected in 2000 u decided to be bedfellas with ZANU(PF) and betrayed the movement. You talk of age, prior to elections that was your tramp card but you lost zvakadaro.Boyz chimboedzai zvekutanga church kuda zvingaite

  3. Zvanzi ane bhora ndiye ano makwa. Whats your problem man. You sound so stressed. You shall be stressed more in the next five years and more to come. We voted for Zanu pf to lead us the way they deem fit according to their manifesto. They are the ones who are in charge. Can you wait until 2018 for your chance if you can convince me and others to vote for you.

Mr. Tamborinyoka, instead of just critisizing,
    1) can you give us a list of those you believe should be in cabinet from Zanu pf
    2) Can you name a shadow cabinet from MDC t for us to compare.
    3) Your party president Tsvangirai has been at the helm of MDC t since 1999. Can you tell us what your party constitution says about the terms of office of party president. How many terms has he held. Is he going to retire and give others a chance.
    4) As for the constitution, you know that it was a negotiated compromise. Zanu pf must definitely change certain compromises in the constituion like homosexuality, dual citizenship etc.

You must also know that Zanu pf is answerable to people like me and others who voted for them. They are not answerable to the opposition or those who voted for the opposition.

    • @Gukurahundi upbringing

I thought those who did not garner a single seat even in their own home soil are the ones with tails in between thier legs. Akunjalo nje mfowethu?

  4. @goto, u have real provided a cracker of the highest order…..to this filthy L Takaringofa/Tamborinyoka/whatever – an alien of Malawian origin. 5. Luke Tamborinyoka you sound pathetically sad.
In other countries, the opposition has a shadow cabinet but in Zimbabwe, we have a strategyless & dysfunctional opposition party with journalists like you pretending to be politicians & talking about issues beyond their comprehension.

What do you know about cabinets with your O level iwe Luke?
Why are you not a policy maker in your party if you know anything about planning?

Please save us the time & space & write a children’s book if you cant find sensible things to write or simply write a letter to Tsvangirayi telling him why he is also useless like you.
    2018 kure mati madii zvenyu.

  6. Umm, so soon back to the opposition trenches Ruka? Life is tough akomana. Just yesterday you were among the very big ones, today you are perfecting the art of opposition politics, i.e. criticise everything the rulers do or say! Eish!

  7. Wena Luke, each & everyone of the new ministers is far much more educated than you & your boss put together. Chete kuti madofo munonetsa mhani.

  8. For sure this cabinet will take us forward to last decades. A silly and stupid person does one thing over and over agn expecting different results. Mugabe is returning e “new” old cabinet expecting economic recovery. Really? Its like recalling Shaya to don e warriors jersey expecting him to help e national team w his football artistry.

  9. @sextape, give yourself a better psuedonym it shows the kind of person you are. can point to you that mugabe with his degree and other given ones has never in years performed infact he is one who shouldn’t be where he is now worse still his cabinet. have you ever seen an educated failure? that is what you have in cabinet

  10. its a pity Luke and Tendai Biti don’t know when to shut up. You are speaking from bitterness and we now all recognise it as such. We told you kuti the private press that were sponsored to catapult you into power are doing the opposite by giving you space to show your stupidity and impotence. How dare you talk of Mavhaire frailness are you God. TANGA watarisa kushata pameso kwaTsvangirayi usati watarisa zveZanu pf. You and Biti you think you are the last and first borns of intelligence in Zimbabwe and anything that doesn’t involve you is bad. Yes tipe ka ideal cabinet yako and shadow cabinet from Zanu pf. Wake up and smell the coffee we have all moved on and left you, daily news, newsday and biti behind. No amount of hatred will put you into power. We thank you for the Constitution that you made thinking you are going to win. Zanu pf will have presidency till 2018 come what may. Shandirai nyika wanga wajaira kufonerwa neStar FM zvichinzi mukoma Luke ichokwadi here zvaElizabeth zvatiri kunzwa. For now hapana achada kunzwa nezvenyu local or abroad.

    • Dont lie to yoself my dear Daisy.Hapana chisingaperi, namwari zwinu zvinoshanduka. If you talk good about Zanu ,a party that has robbed some of us of our future and ordinary Zimbabwean’s lives who have lived and some died under pauperity under the 33year rule by ZANU because you benefit from them, you will soon meet your fate dont worry.I dont find anything wrong by anyone opposing ZANU and wanting a better life for evryone.Indeed no government can satisfy evry citizen but as for ZANU and the years it has ruled Zimbabwe,i havent seen any betterment. If you think God is stupid, dont worry,Gaddafi came and went,Mobutu Seseko came and went,Mugabe came and he will go,You Daisy came and you will definately go.Its a matter of time, but Mwari havazi bharanzi my dear comrade.I dont hate Mugabe and his Zanu,in hate the fact that they lied to this country. Why do i say that? They are the same people who fought against white colonial bondage and now they are the same people who are now doing exactly what the white people were doing to our mothers and fathers, and this time painfully more because we are being ill treated by our own people, our own grandfathers and grandmothers.

  11. Wannabees like Tamborinyoka, reknowned spokeman of the once mighty Tsvangirai why dont yu just shut up…we are tired of your filth, The people chose RG Gushungo and ZANU PF. Your party was rejected. What qualification do yu have in governance? Who said yu can /differentiate who can and who cant perform….whichever way ndivo vanodiwa nevanhu! Basa rakaperaka, makati vanhu “Chinja” vakachinjira ku ZANU PF saka muri kuchemeyi vakuru?

  12. MDC can you explain why you agreed that if the President leaves today, we dont have elections. The party with the departing president chooses another to finish the term. What was the reason for changing what was there. zanu pf had clear reasons for doing that. they looked at the advanced age of their President. You were supposed to refuse because in the event that you lost like you ‘did’ a premature departure of the president by some causes could present an early election. couldnt you see that. so why are you in politics

You agreed that the voters roll should be given to parties in ‘reasonable’ time before elections without specifying time yet the voters roll is so cruicial for any elections. with all those lawyers like biti. then when they refused to give you why didnt you withdraw. it was clear that there was a reason for them refusing. we want amendments to these things. thats the task of the few mps who are there. dont cry about numbers make noise about it day and nite till 2018. ndo politics dzacho

  13. Zimbabweans Zimbabweans honestly, honestly how many of you who are happy to have people at 70 or over ruining your country, whether from MDCS or ZANU. Whats is the ratio of a well educated Zimbabwean to be in the Cabinet from Zanu. The problem with Zanu politics its not about people but about power, How many times have we seen or had people in Zanu retire, all are dying in office even when they are sick they don’t retire. Please visit Binga then you will think twice about Zanu.

  14. The President’s cabinet isn’t a joke. Those are some very serious people buddy, so show respect where respect is due. TIA after all

  15. I was going to write a scathing comment about how Newsday reporters have gone to the dogs with such biased filth, till I noticed it was Tamborinyoka who penned the article.

Ende uri Nyoka zveshuwa. I voted for the revolutionary party ZPF but I’m a bit disappointed that the so called “deadwood” was retained in the cabinet at the expense of fresh blood. Be that as it may I will still vote ZPF over MDC even if they have livestock as candidates. Imagine how much the electorate must hate you that the likes of Chombo win against your hapless party. You may deny reality and scream rigging with no evidence but mumoyo mako unozviziva.

Best look for a new career mate, this one is a dead end for you.

  16. It’s only in Zimbabwe where an election loser refuses to knowledge the legitimacy of a winner but acknowledges their legitimacy to grant loser exit benefits! Only in Zimbabwe where an election loser criticizes the cabinet makeup of a winner but fails to acknowledge the pathetic weakness of their own team! Only in Zimbabwe where age is considered a weakness and youth excellence! Only in Zimbabwe where foreign diplomats are oppositional embedes and challenge a peoples government on behalf of their prefared candidate. Only in Zimbabwe!

  17. first of o most iwe nyoka u are also a dead hood u kip on writing things on behalf of a political party.iwe uri mu evil servant. us real civil servant will block yo salary hamble yo self udzoke pabasa time ichiripo.coz Mudyiwa akuto funga zve exit package iwe unei

  18. I just learnt from yesterdays Herald that there once was a notorious dissident called Tamborinyoka. An apple certainly doesn’t fall too far from the tree.
