THE senior women’s national basketball team is expected to leave for Maputo, Mozambique tonight to take part in the AFROBASKET championships running from September 20 to 29.
Shingi Magede, the general manager of the basketball team told our Bulawayo Bureau that the team will leave for Maputo tonight or tomorrow morning.
“We received the programme of the event yesterday (Monday), though we have not yet received resources, we are hoping to receive some soon because the girl child should be given an opportunity to participate in such big events.
“It is the first time that our basketball team has qualified for this tournament, so we need financial support so that we can take part,” said Magede
Zimbabwe is in Group A together with the hosts, Senegal, Cote d’Ivoire, Tunisia and Algeria and will play the ceremony-opening match against the hosts.
Group B comprises of Angola, Mali, Cameroon, Kenya, Cape Verde and Nigeria.
Sikhumbuzo Ndlovu the head coach of the national team said the tournament is good for Zimbabwean basketball.
“This will be a turning point to Zimbabwe basketball. With the limited resources we had, I think we did our best in preparation, but we are going to a tournament where we will be facing super powers,” said Ndlovu
