Speaking at a dinner for MPs after the official opening of Parliament, Mugabe described the losing Zanu PF candidate for Chinhoyi as a “speculative character”.

“It got him. In Chinhoyi he boasted that he will win, showing off. In the whole of Mashonaland West Chiyangwa is the only one who lost. So I heard from (Local government minister Ignatius) Chombo on that day he did not cry, but slept with his shoes on,” Mugabe said sarcastically.

“I haven’t met with him yet so that I can laugh at him, but that’s a bite, and he knows how to thrive. I know he will pick up again. He must sit down so that we can show him that when you are going to the people, you don’t brag that I have this and that, be down don’t show off, money doesn’t work all the time.

“So we must work hard and work for the people though I know at the moment it’s not easy because the economy was down and unemployment is on the rise, poverty is on the rise, there is hunger.”

Chiyangwa lost the parliamentary seat to MDC-T’s Peter Matarutse.
