OUTGOING Harare mayor Muchadeyi Masunda is set to attend the United Cities and Local Government (UCLG) world congress in Rabat, Morocco, although his term of office ended in June this year.

REPORT BY STAFF REPORTER

UCLG is an umbrella organisation for cities, local governments and municipal associations throughout the world.

Masunda was elected UCLG co-president in 2010.

In his invitation letter, UCLG secretary-general Josep Roig said: “Although we are aware that your term as mayor came to an end last June, we are still counting on your presence in the UCLG World Congress in Rabat where you would complete your mandate as president of UCLG.”

“You would be expected to chair part of the meetings of our statutory bodies and would be part of the celebration of our centenary,” Roig said.

Masunda sat on several local and international boards during his tenure as Harare mayor between July 2008 and June this year.

  1. If the former mayor has an ounce of respect left in him, he will not attend..for if he attends, in what capacity will he be doing this?

I hope that answers your question.

  2. Maybe I totally misunderstood the import of the article ( bet I am not alone) but to me (no fan of Masunda) it merely says the UCLG is imply extending social etiquette like, ‘tokubikirai here’ knowing full well it is way past midnight. A person well groomed in social etiquette is supposed to answer..’Aiwa munozvinetsereyi tozviona kwayedza’ or something to this effect…These are called social graces and niceties offered are all part of the drill. Why would the UCLG extend this to an unelected officer if not playing their part in the social bargain???

  3. Above post should read..’simply not imply’ and how many times have you been offered something where you KNOW you are expected to decline..please grow up!
