Paramedics arrived to find a grisly scene on the corner Fields Hill and Richmond roads in Pinetown with “people and debris scattered across the scene”.

Bystanders flagged down paramedics, pointing in all directions to the bodies of the dead and injured. They then helped by holding drip bags for some of the injured.

The cause of the accident is unknown, but witnesses said that the truck crashed into the vehicles near the intersection, dragging them and ripping them to pieces.

…Meanwhile South African police say a 23-year-old truck driver arrested for allegedly causing a deadly accident in Pinetown last night will face charges of culpible homicide and reckless and negligent driving.

27 people were killed and 30 more injured when the truck ploughed through four taxis and a car.

Many of the injured remain in a critical condition.

The police’s Vincent Mdunge says the driver was also seriously injured and is suffering from extreme shock.

“He was very unstable at the time as a result of shock, he was also seriously injured, but is in a stable condition.”

Footage of the accident has also surfaced online, via a driver’s dashboard camera.
