AFTER being sacked by Zimpapers’ Star FM early this year, Nokuthula Vundla, aka Black Bird, has vowed to revive her fading music career.

The talented rapper, who featured on Star FM’s Breakfast Show, fell out of favour after asserting that President Robert Mugabe was of Malawian origin in a live broadcast in the lead-up to Mugabe’s 89th birthday.

Although she remained mum on her feelings about the issue, she pointed out that she left the stable after she had been offered a part-time job which she rejected.

Black Bird had temporarily shelved her music career when she joined the local radio station.

But just a few months after joining the new station, she was forced to resign.

“I am back in the performing business and I’m taking my music career seriously.

“During my shows I will be performing with House of Stone, a band which is based in Mabvuku.

“I also work with a dance crew called The Divas,” Black Bird said.

“I had not abandoned music, but it’s only that the new career of being a radio disc jockey that I had embarked on had forced me to put my music on hold temporarily as it was too demanding.”

Black Bird says she is a goal-getter who is not affected by setbacks and does not allow previous circumstances to weigh her down.

“I am a strong mother and slowly I will make progress and prove my critics wrong.

“The idea is to keep on fighting for what you believe in no matter what has been said about you,” she said.

Black Bird has recently taken her performances to Bulawayo, where she featured at Queens Park Sports Bar and Kudu Bar alongside popular Bulawayo hip-hop artiste Nicholas Muchinguri, better known as POY.

Black Bird is one of the few local female hip-hop artistes that are held in high regard as evidenced by her previous performances at the country’s premier carnival, the Harare International Festival of the Arts.

She is also featured on a world female hip-hop mixtape titled World Hip Hop Women: From the Sound Up.
