Assistant police spokesperson for Manicaland, Assistant Inspector Luxson Chananda confirmed over the weekend the fatal crash, adding that police would be on the look out to avoid holiday road carnage.

He said circumstances into the crash were that on August 8, a Masvingo-bound commuter omnibus with 17 people on board burst one of its front tyres.

Chananda identified the driver of the commuter omnibus as Peacemore Mutambanesango, but withheld the identity of the deceased because their next of kin were yet to be advised.

“Upon approaching the 85 km peg along Mutare-Masvingo highway, the front tyre burst. The vehicle then veered off the road and it overturned several times before landing on its wheels,” he said.

Three people died on the spot while the other three died on admission at Mutambara Mission Hospital.

Another one died at Mutare Provincial Hospital where he had been transferred to for further treatment.
