Luminaries to grace UNWTO golf tournament

ZIMBABWE vice president Joice Mujuru, motor racing sensation Axel Jefferies, football legends George Shaya and Peter Ndlovu are expected to tee-off in the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) golf tournament at the Elephant Hills Hotel and Golf Resort this morning.

The tournament will be played in the four-ball-better-ball format. According to golfzone, more than 20 teams of four golfers in each team drawn from the Zimbabwean business community have entered the tournament which includes Liquid Telecoms, Zimplats, Marange Diamonds, TelOne, NetOne, Mbada Diamonds, Croco Motors and Zimbabwe Tourism Authority.

The thrust of the tournament is to showcase and draw the attention of the world that Victoria Falls is a must-visit tourist destination.

“This tournament seeks to provide delegates with highlights on the leisure facilities that are available. It is fact that Victoria Falls has more than 50 leisure activities other than golf,” reads the statement from golfzone.

Vice- President Mujuru, who is the patron of the tournament, is expected to preside over the prize presentation in the evening.

Minister of Tourism Walter Mzembi and Retired Colonel Christian Katsande, who is deputy chief secretary to President Robert Mugabe, will also grace the occasion.

The organisers say Mujuru wishes to turn Vic Falls Invitational into an annual pro-am event on the Zambezi Tour.

Sportspersons like Hamilton Masakadza, Eliot Mujaji and artistes Sulumani Chimbetu and Sandra Ndebele are also expected in the resort town.

The golf tournament, aimed at marketing Victoria Falls as a tourist destination of choice ahead of the UNWTO, is expected to attract more than 100 golfers.
