Coventry wins Dutch T20 title

EXPLOSIVE former Zimbabwe cricket batsman Charles Coventry won his first major piece of silverware in Netherlands after leading his club side Dosti Amsterdam to the Dutch Twenty20 title at the weekend.

Dosti Amsterdam won the title after beating local rivals ACC Amsterdam in the final by nine runs at the Sportpark Drieburg Cricket Ground in Amsterdam on Sunday.
Coventry expressed his delight on his Twitter account soon after the victory.

“Good win @DostiCricket great weekend!!Twenty20 Champions and managed to stay in Topklasse (Netherland’s top flight competition). Well done lads!! Looking forward to more fun next year!” said Coventry.

Although Coventry scored only 19 runs in the final before being runout in the 32nd over, the former Matabeleland Tuskers batsman was instrumental in ensuring Dosti qualified for the final with impressive displays during the competition.

Coventry, who last played for Zimbabwe during their tour of New Zealand in November 2011, is currently not contracted with Zimbabwe Cricket.

After deciding to join the Dutch club in April this year, Coventry has been one of Dosti Amsterdam’s top performers this season, which has seen the Kwekwe-born aggressive middle-order batsman being handed the captaincy.

Prior to moving to Netherlands, Coventry played in the Bangladesh Premier League where he opened the batting with Australian Simon Katich for Duronto Rajshahi, scoring 213 runs from 11 matches.

The 29-year-old is now an experienced campaigner having made his first-class debut at 15 years and 303 days — the youngest player to play first-class cricket in Zimbabwe.

Another record followed a decade later when after a three-year absence from the national side, he made a headline-grabbing return equalling the record for the highest individual ODI score by blasting an unbeaten 194.

He has since become something of a T20 specialist, courtesy of his explosive batting approach, but was continuously overlooked by national team selectors before deciding to play abroad.
