The court heard that on April 5 this year, Obert Shereni met the complainant Memory Semwa at Chinhoyi Civil Court and misrepresented to her that he was a lawyer. Shereni then claimed he could assist her sue her husband on condition she paid $740 service fee.

Semwa wanted to sue her husband for engaging in an extra-marital affair, the court heard.

Shereni then led Semwa to his office where he produced fake summons and instructed her to serve them on her husband. Semwa paid $420 for the “services” promising to settle the balance later.

On April 9 she paid an additional $160 and was issued with a receipt as proof of payment the following day. It was later established that Shereni was a bogus lawyer, leading to his arrest.

Chinhoyi magistrate Felix Mawadze initially sentenced him to a nine-month prison term before suspending three months on condition of good behaviour. An additional three months were set aside on condition he pays restitution by end of September this year.
