Despite facing stiff competition from Sulumani Chimbetu and Jah Prayzah who were at Mega 1 Mahuswa in Graniteside — a venue less than 10 kilometres away — Moyo’s show was fairly attended.

People who attended the show surprised the young musician with a number of presents which included money and various wrapped goodies.

His friend and fellow sungura artiste Romeo Gasa also graced the event with his strumming bass guitar skills, leaving fans in awe and other people who were present at the event included Alick Macheso’s daughter Sharon.

Speaking on the sidelines of the show, Peter said he had decided to celebrate this year’s birthday because of his musical success so far.

“At 24, I am proud to have one successful album to my name, and I have finished the house that my father left and also managing to keep Utakataka Express intact, so I just thought it was worth the while to celebrate it and I am happy with the response I got from our fans,” said Peter.

He said he was humbled by the way different music promoters were showing confidence in him and his band.

The Young Igwe’s debut album Mushonga Mukuru, which has gained popularity, kept revellers on their toes dancing for the better part of the night.

He churned out hits like Konzi, Tutsotso, Mushonga Mukuru, Pasirino, Barika and Mwari Wenyasha, among others, which are proving to be very popular.

“Even outside Harare, the way promoters are gaining confidence in us inspires me,” Peter said.

To those who thronged the venue, the show proved critics wrong for those who believed he is still young to fit in his father the late Tongai Moyo’s shoes.

On Friday the young musician will be sharing the stage with Botswana-based musician Slizer in Bulawayo.
