AFTER hosting the successful Zimbabwe International Carnival two months ago, the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) says they will host another carnival in Victoria Falls next month.

The cultural carnival is slated for August 23 to welcome the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) delegates at the general assembly in the resort town.

Zimbabwe and Zambia will co-host the 20th Session of the UNWTO general assembly from August 24 to August 29 in Victoria Falls and Livingstone respectively.

ZTA spokesperson Sugar Chagonda said government had requested ZTA to host the carnival as a way to unite people in celebrating the UNWTO indaba.

“Government requested that we host a carnival to welcome the UNWTO delegates and showcase the country’s diverse cultures. The carnival will serve as part of the UNWTO celebrations because the hosting of the UNWTO in Zimbabwe is an endorsement of the destination of Zimbabwe,” Chagonda said.

Groups including corporates and artistes were already registering at the ZTA offices to be part of the carnival. This will be the second carnival in the resort town after the successful Vic Falls Carnival last year.

Chagonda said carnivals were a good way of promoting unity among people. The world over, carnivals were characterised by celebrations and entertainment, with performances from various artistes, an array of international food dishes and a family fun-day, among other things.

People dress up in the most outrageous costumes, take to the streets, join thousands others and dance to loud music like no one was watching.

Such is the mood during a carnival, it is a public street party that has some elements of an agricultural show, but only better.

After the carnival, a Tourism Night will be held at Vic Falls Primary School on August 24.

Zimbabwe’s finest musicians, including Sulumani “Sulu” Chimbetu, Alick Macheso, Jah Prayzah, Chiwoniso Maraire and Audius Mtawarira, were billed to perform at the event.

The UNWTO theme song winners will also launch their track at the event.

Chagonda said some African artistes would also be part of the line-up, but they had not finalised with the musicians.

The UNWTO general assembly would be a hive of activity as a lot of entertaining activities have been lined up for the delegates including a tour of one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Victoria Falls, sunset cruises aboard the Zambezi Explorer and a bush party.

A bush party would be held in the Jafuta area located a few kilometers outside the resort town.

Delegates would be ferried to the party venue by a steam train with a DJ on board entertaining them.
