Susan Zevgolis, the secretary of the DragPro Club who run drag racing in this country, said over 3 000 racing fans and 75 competitors made Saturday’s event one to remember.

The latest figures show an increase in the number of fans as during the last drag racing meeting, which was staged at Donnybrook on April 28 attracted a big crowd of over 2 700 people.

“Saturday welcomed a record number of over 3 000 racing fans and a record number of 75 competitors registering, of which 10 were first-time drivers in addition to some new vehicles some of which were very pleasing on the vehicle enthusiast’s eye.

“It was evident by late afternoon on Saturday that Donnybrook was the place to be as spectators poured in to watch the end of day Eliminations Event and to network with like-minded petrol heads.

“Part of the attraction at this third event of the Series was the participation of two South Africa drag cars driven by veteran Zimbabwean driver Reg Murray.

“It has been many years since Drag cars of this type have graced Donnybrook and people were very interested to see how they would perform,” Zevgolis said.

Zevgolis said the Dragpro Club now has a database of over 250 drivers which increases at each event.

“The success of the series also has to be attributed to the very generous support and enthusiasm of its Sponsors, Telecel, hp lubes/Castrol, Belts ‘n Hoses, Turbo Solutions Africa, Autobusiness Magazine and RAM Petroleum, all of whom have committed to sponsor the whole 2013 Series.”

The next event on the 2013 Telecel Series is scheduled for September 1.
