Stormers fume over ‘tour from hell’ fixtures

CAPE TOWN — The Stormers will lodge a “complaint” with South Africa, New Zealand and Australia Rugby (Sanzar) about the provisional 2014 Super rugby fixture list.

The fixtures have thrown up a tour from hell for the Stormers, and their coach, Allister Coetzee, is very unhappy about it.

“Our fixture list was tough and that’s one of the lessons we have had to take on board — how to deal with it,” Coetzee said.

“I’ve seen a provisional fixture list for next season and on tour we have the Crusaders, Chiefs, Brumbies and Reds, which is crazy. We’re definitely going to lodge a complaint about it.”

This year the Stormers were angry about playing away games against the Bulls and Sharks, followed by home games against the Chiefs, Brumbies and Crusaders to start the 2013 campaign.

But having the fixture list changed is going to be well nigh impossible. Sanzar uses, at great cost, a Canadian company to draw up the schedule, and changes have a knock-on effect.

Sanzar’s South African regional tournament director Johan Botes confirmed that franchises had a window to express their opinions, but it was unlikely fixtures would be altered because “if something changes, everything changes”.
