POLICE in Bindura yesterday released the MDC-T’s 15 campaign motorbikes seized in May this year on allegations they had been smuggled into the country.

At the time of their seizure, the MDC-T said the move was meant to scuttle the party’s campaign.

“On Friday, we filed an urgent (High Court) chamber application to have the police release the motorbikes, and the matter had been set down for tomorrow (today),” MDC-T lawyer Tonderai Bhatasara said.

“I asked the lawyers if they had seen the papers we had served them on the release of the bikes. They told me that they were working towards the arrangement of the release of the motorbikes. So today (yesterday) I was advised that they had instructed Bindura Law and Order police to release the bikes. My client is currently at the police station waiting for transport to take the motorbikes.”

Police seized the motorbikes from the house of an MDC-T employee, Susan Mawire. The vehicles were brought into the country by Laphonic Investments, a company reportedly owned by the MDC-T.

The latest development followed another court order compelling police in Gwanda to release the party’s 10 motorbikes which had also been seized under similar circumstances. The bikes were released earlier this month.
