PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe has directed all political party representatives seconded to the Joint Implementation and Monitoring Committee (Jomic) to surrender their allocated vehicles to his office following reports of their abuse.

The directive was issued by Ray Ndhukula, Deputy Chief Secretary (Modernisation and Administration) in the Office of the President and Cabinet, following complaints that some politicians were using the Jomic vehicles for campaign purposes.

The letter was addressed to Global Political Agreement negotiators Nicholas Goche (Zanu PF), Elton Mangoma (MDC-T) and Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga (MDC).

“The Office of the President and Cabinet has noted with grave concern the rampant abuse of the Joint Implementation and Monitoring Committee’s vehicles by some political parties,” Ndhlukula wrote.

“As such, the current state of affairs where Jomic vehicles are being used for partisan activities constitutes gross abuse of the assets. Accordingly, this office has no option, but to request that the vehicles be withdrawn from the officers to which they were allocated and be placed under its custody with effect from Monday 22 July 2013. This is a temporary measure to stem the rampant abuse of the vehicles,” he said.

Zanu PF recently pulled out of Jomic citing the alleged abuse of the vehicles by MDC-T and MDC officials.

Jomic, which comprises of representatives of the three parties in the inclusive government, was set up in 2008 to monitor the implementation of the Global Political Agreement.
