IN an incident that has left workers at Chabwino Farm in Juru shell-shocked, a 59-year-old man who accused his wife of infecting him with HIV allegedly set his mother-in-law’s hut ablaze killing her instantly while his wife who was in the same hut died two days later.
Mashonaland East acting provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Tendai Mwanza yesterday confirmed the incident which happened at Chabwino Farm on July 4 this year, adding the suspect, Muhamadi Bashira, had since gone into hiding.
Mwanza identified the victims as Joyline Zhuwao (35) and Bashira’s mother- in- law Eustina Luwisa (79).
According to the police, Bashira had a misunderstanding with his wife after he allegedly accused her of infecting him with HIV.
Following the altercation, Bashira was ordered by Luwisa to leave the farm compound. Bashira complied and allegedly sought refuge at Leonard Chirimudeve’s home in the same compound. The following morning, Bashira allegedly set his mother-in-law’s hut on fire and fled the scene.
Fellow villagers then extinguished the fire and rescued Zhuwao, but failed to save Luwisa as the roof had collapsed on her.
Juru police attended the scene and rushed Zhuwao to Parirenyatwa Hospital while Luwisa’s body was taken to the Murewa Hospital mortuary for postmortem. Zhuwao died two days later.
