Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Enock Chishiri said the incident, which happened last Thursday, involved Constable Elda Bindura based at Mutare Central Police Station and a kombi driver identified as Innocent Musongeya.

According to police, Bindura allegedly spotted Musongeya picking up passengers at an undesignated point, but as she closed in on him, the kombi driver sped off.

Bindura made a follow up and caught up with him in Sakubva suburb. She ordered him to drive towards Mutare Central Police Station and when they arrived, Musongeya parked the vehicle outside the police camp where his conductor disembarked.

He immediately drove off at high speed with Bindura on board.

Musongeya drove towards Aerodrome Road with the distraught police officer calling for help.

When the officer realised that she was being taken to an unknown area, she jumped to the front seat where she wrestled with the driver. She tried to call her colleagues, but Musongeya took the phone and threw it outside.

As they were proceeding towards the bushy Nyakamete industrial area, Bindura managed to switch off the ignition forcing the kombi to slow down. Musongeya then jumped off and escaped.
