THE honeymoon is finally over for the new kids on the block, Extra Kwazvose, as they step out of their mentor Alick Macheso’s shadow tonight to face the harsh realities of the local music industry.

Report by Silence Charumbira

A lot is expected from this formidable side led by the “Rebels”, Franco Slomo, Jonasi Kasamba, Noel Nyazanda and Obert Gomba, particularly because of their individual talents.

But, it is well known that individual talent alone will not do the trick. It requires charisma and exceptional leadership qualities.

Connectivity with the fans is one of the major challenges.

It has been proven before by similar “rebels”, Zakaria Zakaria and Innocent Mjintu, whom many will attest have managed to produce great music after deserting Alick Macheso, but the fans have not budged and the two have been condemned to commoners.

Macheso himself deserted Madzibaba Nicholas Zakaria in 1999 where he was more or less the “wow factor” and got away with it.

Yet still, that does not mean it will be a stroll on the park for Extra Kwazvose.

In the past, confrontations have won the day for some musicians like Energy Mutodi, who took Macheso head on and became talk of the town thereby earning the much required exposure for his music.

As they say, “controversy pays”.

Could this be the plan by the new outfit? Or rather how do they wish to tackle these challenges?

According to Slomo their names are the strategy.

“There is not much that we can talk about that we have planned to get people’s attention besides our names,” Slomo said.

“The people know us and they know what we are capable of at show and that should be enough strategy.

“Of course it is going to be difficult, but we are not afraid of anything and anyone.”

He poured cold water on speculation that they may intend to take Macheso head on.

“Well it is people who fight on our behalf not that we will have blessed them.

“Different of opinions causes a lot of fights, but we are just out to entertain people and not fight anyone,” he added.

The band launches their debut album Ndizvo Zviripo at the Aquatic Complex tonight.

Their first test is also in front of thousands of music lovers that are expected to throng the venue to witness their grand entrance. To make matters worse, they play alongside the Batai Munhu combination of Sulumani Chimbetu and Jah Prayzah, high flying Peter Moyo and the Dembo Brothers.
