ZANU PF parliamentary candidate for Zvimba North Ignatius Chombo yesterday turned the burial of slain party activist Felix Murombedzi into a campaign platform accusing civic society groups of openly campaigning for the MDC-T.

Murombedzi was allegedly abducted from his Banket home more than a week ago before his body was found floating in Mazvikadei Dam four days later.

Addressing about 300 mourners in Banket, Chombo described the death of Murombedzi as “tragic” and urged the villagers to vote resoundingly for Zanu PF in honour of the late party official.

“Murombedzi was a cadre of the party. I would like to warn you to be wary of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) who come to you pretending they want to help you by drilling boreholes, for instance, yet their real aim is to prop up the MDC-T,” Chombo said.

“We know they are targeting 58 constituencies where they want to reduce President (Robert) Mugabe’s votes and force another presidential run-off and refuse to enter the race so that there is another government of national unity.

“Since the Constitution has no provision for a Prime Minister, (MDC-T leader Morgan)Tsvangirai and Tendai Biti (MDC-T secretary-general) hope they will then become vice-presidents.”

Chombo alleged NGOs were sponsoring people to register as voters and promising them money if they vote for MDC T.

In his graveside speech, the father of the slain Zanu PF activist said he suspected his son could have been murdered elsewhere and later dumped in a dam near his homestead to enable relatives to easily recover his body.
