ZPC Kariba have played down talk of the title despite the team maintaining top position in the log table as the northern region Division One season moves towards the halfway stage.

Report by Henry Mhara

The Kariba side, on 26 points, beat Lake Harvest 2-1 at Chaminuka Stadium on Saturday to keep their one-point advantage over Flame Lilly in the second tier division.

Lilly beat JMC 3-1 at Chikurubi grounds on the same day.

At Chaminuka, Harvest, who are 10th on the log with 16 points, took an early lead, but Nkosi Mhlanga equalised before former Motor Action player Nevison Salous made sure of maximum points with 10 minutes remaining.

ZPC Kariba secretary Biggie Kwiyeri said: “It’s too early to talk about the title at the moment. We still have a number of games before we can even think of that.”

He added: “We want to continue doing well and try to win every game that comes our way. We have a very strong side. The coach has been rotating the team almost every week, but we still manage to get results.” ZPC are coached by Joisten Mathuthu.

Early pacesetters DStv Rangers recorded their first defeat of the season and the tremors were huge.

The Shame Nemasango-coached side was beaten 2-0 at Starbill to plummet down the ladder from second position to fifth with 22 points. ZRP Morris moved to third position after collecting maximum points at fourth-placed Mushowani with a 2-1 win.

The police outfit has the same number of points (25), as secondplaced Flame Lilly while Mushowani has 22.

At the bottom, Forrester recorded their 10th defeat of the season after going down 2-1 at Twalumba to remain at five points while second-from-bottom JMC’s defeat at Lilly was also their tenth of the season. They have five points as well.

Banket and Power Masters both on 12 points, complete the list of the teams who are facing relegation.

Former Premier League teams Gunners and Blue Rangers will need to up the tempo if they are dreaming of making a quick return to the top flight league.

Rangers were beaten 2-0 by struggling Banket, and are a point behind the relegation cut-off point while Gunners, who have a game in hand against Jumbo Giants, are on 12th position with 16 points.
