Bulawayo hosts this year’s edition of the games and the SRC board met at a local hotel on Monday where the issue was tabled. SRC director-general Charles Nhemachena visited our Bulawayo Bureau offices after the routine board meeting.

“We should submit recommendations to the Ministry on the LOC board by Friday. This is in view of the urgency of the matter that we are already behind schedule given the timeline of hosting the games,” he said.

The SRC has already conducted interviews for the various positions in the LOC secretariat although they are holding interviews for the LOC secretariat for finance director in Harare this Friday. Former ZBC general manager Robson Mhandu is among the front runners to lead the LOC.

“We will then hold an induction workshop for the LOC board (secretariat and the board) in the second week of July. The purpose of the induction will be to appoint officials with the roles they will be expected to play. The LOC secretariat will be full-time while the board will work part-time,” he said.

Nhemachena said some of the committees to work in preparation for the games would include accommodation, catering, technical and facilities.

Nhemachena met Bulawayo Metropolitan Province provincial education director Dan Moyo, National University of Science and Technology (NUST) acting dean of students Stylish Magida as well as provincial director in the Ministry of Public Works Herbert Kurama in Bulawayo yesterday.

“We met them because they are the key stakeholders in the hosting of the games. We wanted to update them on what we have done in terms of preparing for the games and to discuss the key roles that they will play. They will play a critical role in the success of the games,” he said.

Nhemachena said they were happy with the hosting of the games of such magnitude in Bulawayo.

“The decision made by Cabinet for us to host the games is the best news we have heard in a long time. We always like to have such opportunities as sport plays a role in national development. The hosting of these games in Bulawayo will leave a lasting legacy in the form of facilities especially at NUST and other sporting facilities,” he said.

Meanwhile, Nhemachena said the SRC board also resolved to take punitive measures on errant national sport associations who would have failed to submit audited financial statements, budgets and annual reports by July 31.

He said the sporting associations would face censure in terms of the SRC Act and regulations.

Section 30 of the regulations says any national association that fails to comply with the provisions of the Act may be subject to disciplinary action which may include de-registration of the national association, suspension of individuals and suspension of boards that run the association.

Nhemachena said only associations like Zimbabwe Olympic Committee, Zimbabwe Paralympic Committee and Zimbabwe MotorSport Federation had obliged to date.

He said it was necessary for national sport associations to ensure that once members were elected into office, they were inducted and fully appreciated their obligations and for them to be fully aware of the SRC Act and regulations.
