Shabanie storm into Sup8r semis

SHABANIE Mine destroyed Chicken Inn’s hopes of a second silverware with a commanding second half performance to storm into the semi-finals of this year’s edition of the BancABC Sup8r Cup after an exciting quarter-final match played at Mandava Stadium yesterday.

Tarisai Rukanda scored from a Caleb Masocha cross five minutes after the break to put the former asbestos miners ahead while Pervington Zimunya’s spot kick two minutes before full time sealed the victory for Shabanie Mine.

Shabanie Mine head coach Luke Masomere was elated to sail past the GameCox, who are the holders of the Net One Charity Shield. The beat his team 2-1 in a league match at Maglas Stadium last Sunday.

“l am happy with the way my boys played. I think our game plan worked as we shut out Tendai Ndoro, their marksman, and dominated in midfield. Chicken Inn are not an ordinary team. I am satisfied and looking forward to the semi-final,” Masomere said.

Shabanie will now play the winner between Buffaloes and Dynamos, who clash tomorrow at Gibbo Stadium in Chiredzi in the semi-final.

Chicken Inn head coach Mandla Mpofu admitted they were outplayed by Shabanie and said he will now be focusing on the league.

“We were becoming big-headed and we played second fiddle to Shabanie Mine. It might not be a good result for us, but it teaches us to concentrate and remain focused. We will now focus on the league,” Mpofu said.

Shabanie called the shots in the first half with Masocha, Valentine Ndaba and Rukanda wreaking havoc against Chicken Inn, but the goals were not coming.

The offensive started straight from the outset when Ndaba’s header from a corner kick in the third minute missed the target by a few inches.

In the 20th minute, Masocha had a chance to put one in the back of the net, but opted to cross and the ball was cleared by Chicken Inn defenders.

And that goal was always coming as man-of-the-match Ndaba, who troubled Chicken Inn last year when Gunners beat Chicken 3-2 in Gwanda returned to haunt them with his exploits together with Masocha and Rukanda.

Chicken Inn’s Ndoro was rather wasteful and he was tightly monitored by defender Blessed Mbavarira.
