Hunt on for mbanje ‘farmers’

MASHONALAND EAST police have launched a manhunt for two brothers from Uzumba who allegedly evaded arrest after being cornered for cultivating 10 000 plants of dagga.

Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Bulisani Bhebhe said the suspects – Cosmas and Togarasei Mazwienzara of Katsande village in Uzumba — allegedly fled as police invaded their dagga hideout on May 23.

Before the raid, police had received a tip-off that villagers in the area had turned the illegal drug into one of their main commercial crops.

They went on to arrest Bernard Mazwienzara and recovered 2 610 dagga plants from his garden and while they were closing on the other suspects, they were outmanoeuvred but managed to recovered a total of 10 963 plants with an average height of 1,5 metres each.
