The Finance and Development Committee recently resolved that residents should be able to use Econet Wireless mobile money transfer platform — Ecocash — to pay their bills as part of measures of adopting efficient strategies like other companies.

“The service will allow customers to use the Ecocash platform to pay rates, water and other service charges by consumers through Mobile Sims Banking,” read part of the Council minutes.

Econet Wireless recently submitted a proposal to establish a service for mobile bill payment facility for the convenience and satisfaction of their customers on behalf of the city.

The committee noted that there was need for the city to enter into an agreement with Econet Wireless to become a Cocas Bilker in order to access the Electronic value as a payment mode.

“The City Treasurer is set to report back to the Finance and Development Committee on the final agreement to be entered into between the City of Harare and Econet Wireless,” the minutes read.

“The move is set to ease congestion at council centres including Rowan Martin building where residents endured queuing for hours to make their payments.”
