THE late Zanu PF Guruve South MP Edward Chindori Chininga who died in a mysterious car accident last week has been declared a liberation war hero.

Zanu PF secretary for administration Didymus Mutasa confirmed the development yesterday, adding that the status befitted the outspoken former Mines minister who at the time of his death led a parliamentary committee that produced a damning report on the diamond mining sector.
“It’s true we received a letter from the province asking us to confer him with the national hero status, but you know that is not an order given to us. It was not a commanding letter, it was asking and we gave what we saw fit,” Mutasa said.
“We decided to give liberation war hero status and we have communicated with his family.”
Mourners were yesterday still gathered at the ex-minister’s home at number 96 Bedford Road in Christon Bank although it was not yet clear when and where he would be buried.
Chindori-Chininga faced his demise in a mysterious crash last week after his Jeep Cherokee car rammed into a tree at a T-junction along the Guruve-Harare Road, raising speculation that he could have been a victim of internal party fights.
In March last year, Chindori-Chininga survived another horror crash after his Mercedes Benz collided with a pick-up truck near Concession. The Guruve South MP left government under mysterious circumstances in 2004 following a mini Cabinet reshuffle by President Robert Mugabe and later lost his Zanu PF Copac post after being labelled a sell-out.
