AT least 50 high schools will compete in the Plan High Schools Drama Competition finals in September.

Report by Tinashe Sibanda

This followed the successful preliminary event of the Drama Competition last week by Intwasa Arts Festival ko Bulawayo in partnership with Plan Zimbabwe.

The competition for high schools is arguably the biggest drama event in Zimbabwe with 50 schools participating this year.

This year’s theme is “Too Young to Marry” where schools are exploring child marriages, their causes and effects.

Schools have been encouraged to explore the benefits of waiting, pursuing one’s education and choosing a career first.

“The Bulawayo preliminaries saw about 30 schools competing for slots in the finals to be held during September and the schools were pooled in three groups of 10 schools per pool,” Raisedon Baya, who is part of the organisers, said.

He said Pool A met at Mpopoma High on June 19, Pool B was at Townsend Girls High on the 20th and Pool C was at Eveline Girls High on June 21.

Msiteli, Gifford, Eveline Girls, Townsend Girls, Milton Boys and Mzilikazi made it straight to the finals.

Meanwhile, for their spirited effort and showcasing plays that exhibited potential, Mzingwane Boys, Sobukhazi, Sizane, Entumbane, Founders, Foundation Technical College and Nketa will clash again for the remaining two slots in the finals.

These will meet at the end of July.

“Last year’s winners Mpopoma did not make the grade which is evidence that the competition continues to get stiff in schools,” Baya said.

He said the competition sought to identify and nurture talent while also advocating for child rights and protection issues in schools, communities and the world at large.

The finals of the Plan Drama Competition will be held on September 26 at Bulawayo Theatre during the 9th edition of Intwasa Arts Festival koBulawayo.
