St George’s College hosts major football tournament

St George’s College will again host a major footfall tournament for boys under the age of 20 years. The Tournament, dubbed “The Hammer and Tongues St George’s U/20 Invitational Soccer Tournament”, has been named after its principal sponsor, Hammer and Tongues, and will involve 20 teams from schools throughout the country.

Soccer is a very popular sport at the College with large numbers of players from junior to senior teams enjoying the wonderful facilities that the College offers. The College 1st Team has enjoyed many tours to South Africa in recent years as well as many local tournaments. This tournament is being organised by the St George’s Football Committee, made up of Parents of the players, in conjunction with the school and the principal sponsor. The Head of Football at St George’s College, Mr Bright Dzuda, said that the tournament was being organised to provide an opportunity for teams to compete with each other from all over the country.

The tournament, which begins on Friday, 14 June 2013, at 14:00hrs and continues on Saturday, from 08:00hrs to 17:05hrs, will have 4 groups of 5 teams playing against each other with the top 2 in each group going through to the knock out stages.

The teams will be competing for the brand new “Peter Lovemore Trophy” in honour of the late Peter Lovemore, one of the founding Directors of Hammer and Tongues. There will also be up to 10 individual prizes for the top goal scorer, best player, best goalkeeper, etc. There will be lots of good soccer on display for spectators to watch. The legendary ex soccer player and radio now sports announcer Alois Bunjira is tipped to do the commentary and to entertain people on the day. All soccer lovers are welcome to come and watch some of the top soccer school teams in action this weekend.
Food and refreshments will be on sale all day on Saturday.
