SOUTH Africa goalkeepers’ coach and Fifa instructor Alejandro Heredia, who is in the country for an ongoing goalkeepers’ coaching course, said Zimbabwe has a potential to produce world class goalkeepers like former Warriors goalie Bruce Grobbelaar.

The Argentina born Heredia, who has also coached Absa Premiership sides Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, was been invited by Zifa to train local goalkeepers’ coaches.

The six day course which has attracted more than 30 retired goalkeepers, national team goalkeepers coaches and premier league goalkeepers coaches, among them Nkululeko Dlamini, Peter Nkomo, Richard Tswatswa, Chenjerai Dube, Kembo Chuma, Gift Muzadzi and Matsika Ndega, is expected to conclude on Sunday.

Speaking at the official opening of the course in Harare yesterday, Heredia said the country already has good players, but with proper training they can turn into world class.

“I know of Energy Murambadoro, Tapuwa Kapini and Washington Arubi, they are really good goalkeepers from this country. But we have to produce better goalkeepers in this country, the Bruce Grobbelaars. We can only do that through these courses,” said Heredia.

Zifa board member development Benedict Moyo, who was the guest of honour at the function, said the course would, among other things, help upgrade the standards of goalkeeping coaching in the country to keep with the latest goalkeeping trends in the world. “It has been a long time since we had an exceptional group of naturally talented group of goalkeepers in the country. The talent is out there but we have not been able to nurture it,” Moyo said.

Zifa chief executive officer Jonathan Mashingaidze thanked Fifa for facilitating the course and the Zimbabwe Germany Society, through Warriors coach Klaus Pagels, who provided the venue for the course.
