Zesa comes under Parly scrutiny

-

THE performance of power utility, Zesa Holdings, will next week come under scrutiny when Parliament begins countrywide public hearings to gather views of consumers pertaining to service delivery, among other issues.

Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Mines and Energy chairman Edward Chindori Chininga yesterday confirmed the development, saying the hearings would tackle challenges being experienced by consumers with Zesa’s service delivery systems.

“We want the public to speak out on issues such as prepaid electricity meters, smart meters, load shedding, Zesa billing systems and general issues that affect them in terms of Zesa power supplies, generation of power, infrastructure and other support systems,” said Chindori Chininga.

Chindori Chininga said members of the new Mines and Energy committee to be set up after elections would use the collected information since the current Seventh Session of the Fifth Parliament ends on June 29.

“It is individuals who move out of Parliament and government, but these institutions continue and that information will still be used for the benefit of the people,” he said.

Government has already approved the unbundling of Zesa Holdings into three separate entities — Zimbabwe Power Company, the Zimbabwe Distribution Company and the National Grid Services Company — in a bid to improve efficiency.

Meanwhile, the Mines and Energy Committee will present two other reports just before the current session of Parliament is dissolved.

“Apart from the Zesa report which we are going to present after collecting views from people, the committee is also going to present a report on Chiadzwa and chrome mining in Zimbabwe,” he said.

The Chiadzwa report brings to the fore the committee’s findings on how diamond mining is being carried out in Marange, while the report on chrome is expected to tackle issues related to the ban on exportation of raw chrome, amongst other issues.
