A 22-YEAR-OLD Binga woman committed suicide last week by drinking poison after her boyfriend denied being responsible for her pregnancy, police confirmed yesterday. Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson Inspector Siphiwe Makonese said the incident occurred on May 9 around 10am in the Lusulu area of Binga.

“On the day of the incident, Mary Munyanyi (22) of Evelyne Munyanyi’s homestead under Chief Sinamagonde in the Lusulu area in Binga, went to her mother’s hut when her mother was not around,” Makonese said.
She said when Mary got into her mother’s bedroom hut, she proceeded to take an insecticide, carbon sulfan, that was in the bedroom and drank all of it.
“Mary’s younger brother Kelvin later found her writhing in agony and upon being questioned, Mary told her brother that she was dying,” the police spokesperson said.
Makonese said the brother then informed his uncles who immediately rushed to the scene to assist.
“All efforts to help Mary were fruitless as she died before being taken to hospital.” A report was made to the police at Lusulu who attended the scene and no foul play was suspected.
Makonese said an empty container of the insecticide was found near the deceased and a suicide note was found in her clothes.

“The now-deceased had revealed in her letter that she decided to commit suicide because her boyfriend had refused that he was responsible for the pregnancy and had, therefore, refused to take care of her baby,” she said.
Makonese said domestic violence was taking different dimensions, such as emotional abuse leading to suicides.
She warned the public to desist from resorting to suicide as a way of ending problems faced.
