A BULAWAYO man who stole his uncle’s army uniform to get a free ride on a National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) commuter train has been fined $50 after he was convicted of impersonation.

Malcom Kurira (28) pleaded guilty to the charge when he appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Merlyn Mutshina last Thursday.
He was convicted and sentenced to two months in jail, which were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
He was also fined $50 and if he fails to pay, Kurira would be jailed for a month.
The court heard that on April 19, Kurira boarded a city centre-bound train from Nkulumane suburb wearing an army uniform belonging to his uncle Alfred Sango, a soldier.
He wanted to avoid paying the fare for the journey. Kurira told NRZ security officer Temba Phiri that he was a member of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces and had no money to pay for the journey.Kurira was then seen by a member of the army who became suspicious and interrogated him.
Kurira told the army officer that he had stolen the uniform from his uncle who is based in Harare. He was arrested and handed over to the police, who charged him with impersonation.
