Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Siphiwe Makonese yesterday said the deceased cop was Chief Inspector Patrick Haruzivishe, the officer-in-charge at Lupane Police Station.
“Chief Inspector Haruzivishe was driving towards Lupane along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls highway, driving a police Defender truck,” she said.
“On board were his wife and four police officers. When they got to the 126 kilometre peg, a Bakers Inn truck headed towards Bulawayo encroached into the lane of the Defender.”
Makonese said the two vehicles side swapped resulting in the Defender deflating a front right tyre, veering off the road and rolling twice before landing on its wheels.
Haruzivishe died on the spot, while the others suffered various injuries, Makonese said.
She said a report was made to the police who sent Haruzivishe’s body to St Luke’s Hospital mortuary.

“The injured were also taken to St Luke’s Hospital where they are still admitted,” Makonese said.
“Two are said to be in a stable condition, the other two were seriously injured and one is in a critical condition.”
She said Haruzivishe is the second senior police officer in the province to die in an accident this year.
