ALL is set for the second leg of the 2013 edition of the Zimbabwe Chess Federation (ZCF) National Chess Grand Prix to be held in Gweru this weekend.

Over 100 chess players from across the country are set to converge at Chaplin High School on Saturday and Sunday for the extravaganza.

The National Chess Grand Prix is played over five legs and the first leg was hosted in Mutare in February.

National team player Dionne Moyo, who won the first leg and currently tops the table, will be hoping to continue with his fine form to clinch the second leg and inch closer to winning the tourney.

Moyo will, however, have to contend with competition from fellow national team players such as Robert Gwaze, Spencer Masango, Lloyd Moyo and Thabo Elisha.

The grand prix, which is an open tournament, will also see some unheralded players battling it out with their acclaimed counterparts.

Gweru-based Rugare Uchena and Trust Usai, who gave a good account of themselves in the first leg in Mutare, are some of the unheralded players who have the pedigree to cause upsets.

Fracson Dzenga, chairperson of the Midlands Chess Association (MCA), who are hosting the second leg of the tournament in conjunction with ZCF, said the aim of the tournament was to provide a platform for chess players in the country to interact and exchange notes.

“This is an open chess tournament which means it is open to anyone who feels they can play chess. The idea of this kind of tournament is to create a platform where new players can share and exchange notes with their experienced counterparts,” Dzenga said.

The third and fourth legs of the Grand Prix will be held in Masvingo and Bulawayo respectively with the final in Harare on dates yet to be announced.
